Crash and derailleur failure could be my fault because I chose the route. I gave him several opportunities to turn back before and after the fall but he has tenacity. Perhaps randonneuring is in his future.

If he didn't break any bones or suffer any gashes, then he had a pretty successful super-steep ride, I'd say. But obviously, the bent derailleur is your fault, because if you hadn't shown him how to patch a tube, he wouldn't have been able to get back on the bike and then fall over!

It was good to ride with you from the last control to the finish. The Snickers ice cream bar gave me the right boost at this contro. Later I got a cell call from you where your car broke down. For some reason, I was heading home via Rt 460, probably about 30 miles from you on the other side of the James River. I'm glad you made it home on Sunday. Makes you wonder if we should spend a little more time checking our cars out than our bikes. I chuckled at your comments about the car title, paying off the car, and the hidden chip.

I finished just before 11. When I stopped at Andrews Store, the clerks told me to be careful and to keep a look out for the "hippies", who were having a substance enhanced party in the area, and would soon be driving around in a state of ... < fill in your own adjective >.

I live in such dread fear of forgetting my card that I refuse to ditch my handlebar bag; that way I can check for the card 3 times in the first 3 miles after leaving a control.
I'll still probably do it sometime though.
Glad it worked out after the initial difficulties.

Great report Bob. Really enjoyed reading it. Still don't know how we missed seeing each other at the finish. I don't care how many people say it, I still think the Fleche is actually tougher than a 400k.

All, I can assure you the stomach issue was more comic than a show-stopper and was over rather quickly. I wonder what anyone that happened to be watching thought. lol. I didn't suffer any additional issues. I did have to force feed myself a couple GUs to keep going though.

Awesome ride and report, Bob! But you left out the bears! :) Team Riders on the Bubble kicked butt, and I LOVE that we came in so close the the 24hr mark. Sorry about the Micky-D's. :( I have some photos and video that I hope to post today or tomorrow. I had a blast, thanks for motivating us to get a team together!

My view: Unless you are in serious danger, it is unfair to allow a fellow randonneur to lose their brevet to help you out, when all you are is snoozy. Just tell them you're fine, make sure they keep on going, and take a nap by the road. If you were more seriously ill than your post suggests, then I apologize. But in that case, I think you should have abandoned at the log cabin.
